I'm so nervous. Now that the euphoria has settled down somewhat I am just a touch anxious about getting through this first trimester without any mishaps. First goal is getting good follow up BT results on Friday, then of course that first scan at 6 weeks and then that magical 12 week mark. I know it isn't a guaruntee once you get there but I think I'll be able to relax just a tad more! Does anyone know anything that can help prevent miscarriage? I'm eating so super healthy and have acupuncture lined up for Friday. Have been feeling a wee start of morning sickness (yesterday felt really quite crook in the arvo!) but nothing today (probably because I got some crackers to munch on whenever I felt hungry) but the sore boobs are starting to kick in. I've had some cramping (more sharp pains occasionally that come and go) but nothing I'm too concerned about. I've heard cramping/pains can be quite normal - if you've experienced it please reassure me!
Any first few weeks survival tips/stories most welcome!!

Hey Haidee, I don't think you can do much to prevent miscarriage but the Pessaries and Progynova will sure help you up until 12 weeks. And the bloods will continue as well from memory. Best thing you can do is try and relax and enjoy every moment!
ReplyDeleteI have heard that if you keep crackers beside your bed, when you wake up, before you get up, eat a couple of crackers, it is suppose to help with morning sickness!

ReplyDeleteAs a survivor of rpl, I can honestly say that if a loss is going to happen in the first trimester, it will. There is nothing that you can do, so instead I suggest celebrating each and every day that you are pregnant!
ReplyDeleteThat said... have you ever had issues with a short luteal phase? That was my primary issue, and when I got pg this time around, my OB immediately put me on progesterone suppositories. They weren't fun to deal with, but it kept this little Halfling where he/she belongs. I was on them until I was 14 wks.
There are the other usual suggestions... avoid caffiene, nicotine, etc. And check with your doc before starting any new vitamins or supplements.
I'm so happy for you! I found that watermelon really helped with my morning sickness... as did staying hydrated. The weeks will fly by before you know it!
Taking a Folic Acid supplement is supposed to help prevent miscarriage. I am currently taking a total of 1600 mcgs as it also helps prevent birth defects. My first daughter was born with a heart defect, and Folic Acid helps to prevent it again.

As Gamgee said, if it's one thing I've learned this past year unfortunately a lot of things are out of our control. Try to enjoy the happy moments and know that you're doing all you can to make this a successful pregnancy.

Agreed that you can't prevent a miscarriage but also not doing things like heavy lifting will help :) I've also had RPL and am on Progesterone tablets and I'm really hoping this little bean will stick :) I've had 2 scans but it still doesn't feel real! one week until the magical 12 weeks. It goes so slowly but just take care of your self and take it easy. Good Luck !!
ReplyDeleteGinger and lemon for morning sickness, if that happens ... nothing you can do to prevent miscarriage (except avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, etc.), but try to take it one day at a time, drink lots of water ... and hang in there!

I have had some cramping and pains but I think (read: hope) they are totally normal. It seems like feelings of fear/nervousness/worry are par for the course after everything. Let's stay positive!!!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy each day. Stay away from caffine and look after yourself. Get plenty of sleep as I found morning sickness worse if I got tired. Also the crackers as soon as my eyes opened in the morning. Leave it a few minutes would be too late but that doesn't go for everyone. I would say with all your symptoms that has to be a good sign for a sticky one or two. The risk goes down significantly after 6 weeks and then 8 weeks so if smaller goals are more your thing then go with it. 12 weeks can seem like a long time.

We got our natural BFP over a year ago after 4yrs TTC and we have a beautiful bubba. But I still have my fingers crossed for everyone on that board.I was so excited for you that you finally got those two beautiful lines. Your journey hasnt been easy and I know until that bub is safely is in your arms you wont be able to relax.As much as I wanted to relax and enjoy pregnancy I prepared myself for the worst, now Ive had my miracle bubba. I wished I let myself enjoy it a little more. Hopefully you can too. The first 28 weeks goes so slow, but after that it goes super quick. My cramping lasted the whole first trimester. It is a little scary, but its completly natural. As for your beautiful little bubba growing, give her/him a little tickle and tell them see you soon. :) Best wishes to you and your amazing partner.

ReplyDeleteI totally understand your anxiety -- I was the same way (I now have an almost 9 month old). The previous commenter was right, though -- if a miscarriage is going to happen there is nothing you can do to prevent it (it usually means that the embryo was not chromosomally healthy). So try and just focus on keeping yourself healthy and happy and try to enjoy these moments...I, too, wish that I had let myself soak it in and enjoy it.
Cramping is totally normal, BTW!
If I ever get to your stage, I'm going to be dreadfully nervous too. I wish that we could somehow get a note from our future selves telling us that it's all going to be okay.
