HOW DO YOU DO IT?

I feel like I might quite possibly burn out working full time and attending to a baby that is no longer sleeping through the night. Cohen has decided to start waking up several times a night and has done so pretty much since I returned to work (it started a couple of weeks beforehand so don't think they're connected). 14 weeks of uninterrupted sleep and now this. First week I thought it was a phase or growth spurt. Now it's been going on for about a month and it's getting worse. I feel a bit like I have a newborn again!

  1. Have you started solids yet hun? Ryan slept through from 8 weeks and then suddenly started waking a week before he turned 4 months old. I started some solids and he went back to sleeping through :) sushi_girl xx

  2. i agree with the pp. i've had a couple of girls in my mother's group with the same thing (one baby is five and a bit months, the other is four and a half months old) and both babies went back to sleeping through the night after starting solids (and one was exclusively breastfed so she introduced a couple of formula feeds before bedtime.) it might not be that at all, but it might be! - good luck either way.

  3. No, we haven't started solids yet. He is 5 and a half months old now. Well, actually we did try some baby rice about 3 weeks ago and he had the worst night ever that night (kept waking up screaming which I suspect was due to a sore tummy) so now I am terrified of the whole solids issue. Completely new territory!

  4. Oh you poor thing! I am already scared of going back to work full-time after bubs... I'm still trying to figure out if we will be able to afford me just going back for 3 days to start with...I don;t know! It's not easy, but I guess you get used to it.... eventually?!

  5. It will get easier. Is he getting teeth? Growth spurt? I can't remember that far back. Like all phases, it will pass. I know it doesn't help much now though. When do you go back full time? I didn't go back full time till B was 2&half, and it was too much. now he is 4 I'm back 4 days a week. I have an hr travel each way so that's added time away from home. It's damn hard being a mum, so we really need to go easy ourselves. Money doesn't grow on trees, so we have no choice..

    But I can say that thanks to my son I'm now a perfect party animal. I can stay up till 4am with adults and be back awake at 6am watching cartoons making toast soldiers. With sleep you quickly learn to accept you have lost it, and move on. You can never get lost sleep back.

  6. I thought I was back full time today but turns out we got our wires crossed and I wasn't supposed to be there at all! So, have tomorrow and Thursday off and start back full time next week (5 days a week until February as two of my workmates are going overseas for Christmas). This means leaving Cohen at Grandmas at 6.15am and picking him up at 6.30pm. From February I will be back to my permanent arranged hours of 8.30am - 4.30pm (so leaving him at Grandmas at 6.15am and picking him up at 5.30pm)Tuesday - Friday. Full on!!!!

  7. Oh Haidee, I feel for you. You are going to find it tough to start with, but somehow we find the strength to get in with it, as you learnt with infertility, and you smacked that bitch right up! If I win Oz Lotto tonight I'm giving you cash to keep you at home for all of 2012. You have my word. You are a good mum, don't ever doubt that. I fell in that trap when I went back to work when B was 18wks old. You won't miss a thing, don't let stay at home mums suggest this. I saw B's first everything, an you will be there for all of Cohen's. My heart goes out to you. I know what u r feeling. Damn the struggles never end...xx

  8. Thanks Tee, hence the stress I'm under at the moment! Once it gets to February and things return to some sort of normal routine it will be ok. Just a bit nervous about these long hours in January!

  9. We go through this kind of a phase every couple months (starting after the 4 month sleep regression). I find that it normally resolves itself with either a tooth (or hy.land teething tablets before bed), an adjustment of bedtime (he's suddenly been going down about 30 min later and sleeping better) and, an adjustment to his food. We didn't start solids until 5.5-6 months (and then just a little bit once a day). Then he went to 1/2 jar 2x a day (plus bottles obviously). Now we're about 1-2 jars a day. I'll be honest that I thought we were good on food and then his daycare provider let him keep eating one day and ate a bunch more! And then slept well. Now, the type of food or quantity is what I mess with first. But (as you can see in my blog) sleep is something we struggle with a lot---I think that's just something we are going to have deal with. Sorry for the novel!

You do what you have to do and its quality time over quantity...you are a wonderful mother and with the hard act of balance work, life and baby....you will do a perfect job thats perfect for you and dont let anyone else tell you otherwise...we all do not fit into the same hole/box on what is right or wrong...

    I will be working from home but on limited duties first 4 months then part time from home after that juggling my own business but I chose that and feel that its right for me like whats right for you
