MIDWIFE APPOINTMENT

My midwife is an adorable lady who lives 2 doors down from my house. She arrived last night at 7.40pm for our appointment and didn't leave until 9.30pm! She is super chatty and just wonderful, we feel very lucky to have her on our side. The appointment went really well - baby boy is head down (woohoo!) and hopefully he decides to stay that way! HB was between 145 - 153bpm and my belly is measuring 27 weeks which is apparently spot on. I got my referral for my glucose test (yikes, I'm not sure about this sugar drink I'm supposed to consume, sounds pretty nasty!) which is testing for gestational diabetes. Fingers crossed that one comes back ok! We also did my Care Plan which is like a birth plan where we make and note down decisions on some of the major points when it comes to the labour - like if the HG will assist with the birth of his son as he comes out (this was a resounding NO) and whether he will cut the cord (he will if he's still upright apparently and not passed out on the floor . . . hmm . . . and he is my one support person! God help me!), also the skin to skin (yes) and what we want to do with the placenta (still in discussion about this - not sure whether to let the hospital discard of it or whether we want to take it home and bury it). So many decisions and scary to think that we only have 11 and a bit more weeks until the real thing! The HG was curious and asked many questions regarding the birth which was quite revealing. He had no idea how long labour would take (I seriously think he thought we'd pop into the hospital for a couple of hours and come out with a baby!) and was shocked to discover the truth. I think we are REALLY going to need those antenatal classes!

  2. Your midwife sounds lovely! When do antenatal classes start? That's good that HG is at least asking question about it!I asked hubby one day if he would want to cut the cord if we had a baby....he looked rather green at the suggestion too hehe.

  3. Every time you post, I can't believe how far along you are! So exciting!

It's funny when a man is so surprised to find out something we assumed was common knowledge.

  4. The drink is really not bad at all. Tastes like flat very sweet lemonade. Worst bit is having to sit there and wait for an hour for the blood test :)

  6. That all sounds great news. What is the reason/meaning behind for burying the placenta?

  7. Ha, Duke and I both refused to cut the cord, it was so gross, and I have a really short cord, so it would have been too close to the gory bits down there. Duke did help with delivery of our son though. I think you will find HG wont have much choice, and will have a footprint bruise on his hip when you start pushing. There is none of this staying up the good end near your head. I refused the mirror in labour to see his head, I was happy to wait till he got out! I wont tell you what else happens in labour... he he he...

Oh and the drink is fine, like flat lemonade, I liked it! And I took a book to read while I waited. Best of luck!

  8. The drink is ok, yep it tastes like lemonade or gatorade. I decided to donate my cord/placenta for research purposes but taking it home and burying it was also an option. The antenatal classes were awesome especially for my ignorant DH! Good luck with everything and I'm getting really excited for you!

  11. Thanks ladies, the HG really is clueless about this whole process and what comes after! Haha. I did my GD test and the drink wasn't bad at all, just like cheap lemonade. Now fingers crossed for good results!
